FOIL: How do you access records and information from The Village of Wappingers Falls?

Ok, you might be thinking more adventures and photogrpahy and fun Wappingers Rises! We promise we can do both! We believe it’s important to open the door and be able to easily access information. After we shared a few posts with (factual only) information on the election we were inundated with questions about getting information so we are here to send you to the source!

New York State’s Freedom of Information Law (Public Officers Law §87 et. seq.) allows members of the public to access records of governmental agencies. FOIL provides a process for the review and copying of an agency’s records.

More about the Freedom of Information Law is available from the Committee on Open Government.

The FOIL Request Form is available here.

Commitee of Open Government is an amazing resource. They are there to answer questions and make sure you get your information per the guidelines and laws in place. Contact them with questions: (518) 474-2518

1. Try the village FIRST. Contact them, ask your questions but if you’re left feeling confused or still needing more information start the FOIL process. The information is public information.

2. Ask your question as precisely as you can. Be direct and clear or the request will

be rejected making the process longer.

3. Consider submitting several requests on individual forms if you have a multiple point question.
