Chris took a very quick break from this busy time of the season (as they work to prep and plant high tunnels and early fields) to update the community on what’s happening.
WR: We saw you planted 600 tomato plants - can you tell us more about what to expect this season?
CHRIS: We recently planted our first of three tomato successions. By staggering our successions we are able to prolong our harvest; tomatoes are one of our favorite crops to grow and eat!
WR: We’re excited for tour CSA - can you tell us more about your CSA?
CHRIS: Our CSA has expanded this season to 24 weeks, running from May 27th through November 7th. Members can choose to pick up on either Wednesday afternoons from 4-7pm, or Saturday mornings 9am-12pm. Pick-ups are at our Farmstand at 81 New Hamburg Road, Wappingers Falls. Each share will consist of around 8 vegetable varieties, which will change on a seasonal basis. For our earliest weeks shares will be heavy on leafy greens like chard and kale, salad greens, fresh radishes and herbs. Main season staples such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and eggplant will begin later in June and will remain as mainstays of the CSA. We are growing over 75 unique varieties of certified organic vegetables and herbs this season and are excited to share our harvest with our community.
WR: Tell us about the farm and your plans based on the current pandemic?
CHRIS: While we have historically offered a market-style CSA in which members were able to select their own produce, this year in light of the Covid-19 pandemic we have chosen to make all of our shares prepackaged, at least to begin the season. We feel that by offering pre-packed shares we are providing our members with a means of obtaining all their weekly produce needs in a safe, open-air setting. While we look forward to greeting and getting to know our members, this season we will have to do so from a safe distance.
We have also partnered with two other Hudson Valley farms to offer add-ons to our vegetable CSA to provide our community the option to obtain more of their dietary needs at our pick-ups. Woven Stars Farm is a pasture-raised meat and egg farm in Ghent, NY. We are excited that they are offering five monthly pick-ups (June-November) of their meat & egg share as well as a share consisting of just eggs. Glorie Farms and Winery in Marlboro, NY will be offering 15 weeks of their fruit share, running mid-July into November. Early crops will consist of stone fruit such as peaches, nectarines and plums, and will transition to apples, pears, grapes, and quinces as the season progresses. These optional add-on shares are available for purchase on our website and will be distributed concurrently to our vegetable shares at the Obercreek Farmstand.
WR: When can we expect to visit and shop?
CHRIS: We are currently working to open our farmstand by the end of April, a bit earlier than our original pre-Covid-19 plans. We are closely monitoring all CDC and USDA recommendations on food handling, sanitation, and employee safety procedures and to that end we will be limiting the number of customers in our farmstand to two, and will be providing all customers with gloves upon entry. We will also likely begin the season by selling our produce by the unit instead of by the lb, to reduce handling by employees and customers. We are being vigilant in our food safety recommendations as well as personal and workplace hygiene, with frequent hand-washing and sanitizing of frequently touched surfaces. All of our produce is grown, harvested, washed and packed by our small crew of three farmers. In our personal lives, we are all strictly following social distancing measures and closely monitoring our own health. With that all said, we will be excited to have our farmstand open serving our community Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 12am-7pm and Saturdays and Sundays 9am-5pm. We will be carrying all of our own organic produce as well as other locally produced items from area farms and producers.
WR: Chris this is great. Can you share the best contact info with us to stay informed?
CHRIS: Our Instagram (@obercreekfarm), website (obercreekfarm.com), and weekly newsletter will provide any additional updates to our plans and offerings.
